Re-gripping your golf clubs regularly is important since grips tend to wear out over time. Maintaining quality grips on your golf clubs will give you the added “feel” you need for better performance. Grips can wear out several times a year, depending on volume of use and the type of grip. Most people bring their clubs to a local golf shop to get regripped when they could be doing it themselves. This article will not only show you how to regrip your own clubs, but how it is also cost-effective to do so.

Materials Needed

  1. Solvent (16oz Can) – $4.00
  2. Solvent Catch Pan – $15.00
  3. Tee – $.03
  4. Double Sided Grip Tape – $5.50
  5. Tape Stripper – $15.00
  6. Grip Cutter – $20.00

Cut Off Old Grip

Using a hooked razor blade or grip cutter, carefully remove the old grip. Make sure to cut away from yourself and others around you. Cut from the bottom of the grip to the butt end of the club. Once this is done you can peel away the old grip, revealing the old tape underneath it.

Scrape Off Old Tape

Now that you have the old grip completely peeled off, you now have to deal with the old tape.  Again make sure to scrape the tape off away from you in case your hands slip. The tape stripping tool is best for this since the end tip is curved to fit along the round club shaft. Make sure to brace the hollow butt end of the club against something when scraping. Be sure that foreign materials don’t enter the opening in the end of the club shaft.

Clean Off Residue

The old tape that has been peeled off will often leave a residue behind. A little residue left behind will help the two sided tape stick to the shaft. However, large amounts of residue can make the two sided tape uneven. The shaft does not need to be spotless, but should be free from large patches of tape residue. If liquids are used to remove residue make sure the shaft is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Apply Two Sided Tape

Place the club into the rubber shaft vice and clamp it in securely.  Be sure not to clamp  the shaft in too tightly, especially with graphite shafts. Align the score lines of the club head vertically to ensure the grip is put on straight. The next step is to apply the two sided grip tape onto the shaft. In order to properly guage how much two sided tape to use, hold the new grip along side the club. Be sure to leave about one-inch of excess tape at the butt of the club. Then twist the overhanging tape and push it inside the club shaft. This will help ensure moisture and other debris doesn’t enter into the hollow shaft area.

Apply Solvent To New Grip

Using a regular golf tee, plug the hole in the cap end of the new grip you intend to install. Then pour a generous amount of solvent inside the grip. Cover the open end of the grip with your finger and shake and turn the grip so the solvent spreads around inside. Next take your finger off the end of the grip and pour the solvent inside over the grip tape. Be sure that every part of the tape is covered with solvent.

Push New Grip Over Tape

After the entire length of the tape is covered in solvent you can proceed to slide the new grip onto the shaft. Be sure to keep the logo side of the grip up during installation if desired. Slide the new grip all the way down the shaft until you feel the butt of the shaft hit the top of the grip cap. Unlock the shaft from the rubber vise and gently tamp the end of the club on the floor. This will ensure the grip fits tight against the end of the shaft.

Grip Adjustment

The last step of re-gripping your clubs is inspecting the finished product.  Put the club into a normal playing position, making sure the grip looks and feels right. Make sure the grip is on straight – this is your last opportunity to make adjustments to the grip alignment. Finally, wipe both the shaft and grip with a clean cloth. Let the regripped club sit for at least an hour to ensure ample drying time.
